The Moth

February 5th, 2010 by J. Celestino

I come fresh from my first ever Moth here in the D.  The Moth is a interesting event where people get 5 minutes to tell a story.  There is a basic theme for the night and you just go up and tell your story.  A few caveats, no notes, stand-up or ranting.  It needs to be real and pretty much of the moment.  I put my name in the hat thinking I wouldn’t be called but as the ninth name was pulled from the hat it just happen to sound like my name.  So I made my way to the stage and stood in front of the microphone with the stage lights in my eyes.  I’ve been in that position before so knowing what to do came pretty easy.  The lights make it difficult to see the audience so the nerves calm a bit.  I told my story pausing for laughter and awes.  All in all it went really well and the applause when I was done was invigorating. I walked back to my drink with people saying that was a great story and great delivery and so on and so forth.  The adulation was amazing, I could have done that all night.

Pencey Prep

January 28th, 2010 by J. Celestino

I heard the news and stared blankly at my computer. People asked me if I was ok, I told them he died.  When they didn’t know who he was I could do little with my vision.  Suddenly the figures asking me questions evaporated like funny smells in the winter cold.  I closed my eyes and tasted salt for a second and continued working.

I kept typing and those figures walked off.  I kept typing and wondered if the figures would appear again.  I kept typing.

Dear he, Thank you.

Short Hair

August 7th, 2009 by J. Celestino

6a00d8341c365453ef0105361a5f40970c-250wiI’ve always found it strange how one develops a liking for something specific. The feel of towels right out of the dryer, or paper after some wax has melted on it. Even the smell of crayons. All of which have strange little stories attached to how my affinity grew for them but I have to attribute my thing for girls with short hair to Watts from Some Kind of Wonderful.

So for that and the many a memory of the mechanics VHS tapes thanks Mr. Hughes.

Don’t Stop til You Get Enough

June 26th, 2009 by J. Celestino

I was listening to Off the Wall two nights ago thinking about remixing it with something for a gig I’m dj’ing tonight. Then to my horror MJ dies the very following day. It’s rare that I put on a Michael Jackson album but I own all of them up to History so it was strange when I heard the news. A coincidence by all means but the 10yr old boy in me wants to put some part of the blame on myself. Not sure why that is. Then the more awful thought came into my mind, I can’t play a remix tonight. It would be too cliche. *sigh*

Thanks for the music Michael.

Tejas

I find myself having less and less in common with Texas each time I return. Yet when I’m there and someone asks me if I’m going home I imediately think of my parents house. In any other part of the world I think Detroit.

VOD FAIL, Torrent FTW.

January 19th, 2009 by J. Celestino

So in a moment of nostalgic weakness we decided to watch all the Alien(s) movies this weekend. Not having a single one in my collection, I turned to the legal online services I enjoy. I began with Netflix and they had the first three movies. So without much hassle and thanks to the new silverlight player we were watching the first three movies, no problems. Then came the 4th movie in the installment. Now I know it’s not that good a movie but it was a marathon, it can’t be stopped. Netflix however failed me. They didn’t have it on play it now. No biggie, I can’t expect them to have all of them. I turn to hulu in hopes that they might have it. Nope, just a few clips to entice. So I broke down and rented it from iTunes. Now the pc I have hooked up to my TV isn’t the greatest so the rental ended up crashing iTunes every time I tried playing it. I copied it over to my intel iMac and was about to watch it there when I get a prompt saying that the movie was authorized on a different computer. This is one of my 5 authorized computers for music but apparently the rental movies are locked to one machine. I ended up letting iTunes support know about the problem. I think after all that including paying the 2.99 rental fee from iTunes I’m entitled to watch the movie. So I torrent the flick and within about 40 minutes we were watching the movie. We used the break to make snacks and the like. BTW 20th Century Fox I deleted the movie after viewing. I just wanted to watch it, not sell or distribute it. Hell I don’t even want it as part of my collection.

If only apple would release new Mac mini’s, so I can make a new media server. *sigh*

The Eclair Collection

December 31st, 2008 by J. Celestino

So after a weekend hanging with friends in Texas I had a bunch of random footage. All taken with the movie mode of my little cybershot camera. So I took all that footage and tried my best to make a cohesive thing out of it. Anyway this is the result, nicely filled with cliches. It’s a small film for my friends.

Baby Dayliner

November 15th, 2008 by J. Celestino

Photo by: Sarah CassA friend of mine recommended Baby Dayliner to me and now I’m hooked. Ethan Marunas has taken on the moniker of Baby Dayliner and delivered a persona that’s a throwback to Manchester and the beginnings of New Wave. Dosing heavily on Temptation era New Order Dayliner has created a fantastic haze of eyeliner music. Channeling Morrissey albeit in a skewed key way. I’d hate to say that he sings off key but he doesn’t necessarily sing on key either. The albums should be packaged with Mabaline products and promises of make-out parties. Watch the video below and make up your own mind.
